Why Ahiflower Is A Better Source for Essential Omega-3

You’ve probably heard about how important essential omega-3 fatty acids are for everything from improving heart health to decreasing inflammation. But did you also know it’s the only essential fatty acid the body cannot produce on its own? This is why eating foods rich with omega-3 is so important.

However, it can be challenging to get enough from diet alone. Thankfully, there are some excellent supplements available — and new evidence has shown that Ahiflower Oil is an ideal source of these important Omega-3s, and in fact, is more effective than flaxseed oil and is better for the planet.

What Is Ahiflower?

Called by its less glamorous latin name Buglossoides arvensis, Ahiflower is also known as Lithospermum arvense, corn gromwell, or field gromwell. It’s native to Europe and Asia (including Korea, Japan, Russia, Afghanistan, and Pakistan) and thrives as an introduced species in North America and Australia. The part that is most commonly used is the oil derived from the seeds of the plant.

Ahiflower Seed Oil Has More of What You Need from An Omega-3 Supplement

Ahiflower seed oil is a high, natural source of stearidonic acid (SDA). Oil content is typically 20%, of which approximately 20% is SDA, as well as other important essential fatty acids such as 42% alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), 11% linoleic acid (LA), and 5% gamma-linolenic acid (GLA).

Why Ahiflower Seed Oil Is A More Sustainable Option Than Fish Oil

For the most part, supplements with Omega-3s are made from fish oil. Unfortunately, this is causing a strain on the fish population. According to the National Institutes for Health, “Fisheries provide fish for human consumption, supplement production and fish feeds and are currently supplying fish at a maximum historical rate, suggesting mass-scale fishing is no longer sustainable.” So Ahiflower seed oil is an easy plant to raise in differing conditions and provides many of the same health benefits without depleting our oceans.

Ahiflower Oil Is Vegan

As a more sustainable, non-animal source of Omega-3s, you cannot beat Ahiflower seed oil. With the availability of Ahiflower oil, companies like Greens First can offer a sustainable, non-genetically modified, vegan source of omega-3 fatty acids into their products — that’s also more effective than flaxseed oil.

Contains A Better Variety of Omegas

Unlike other sources of omegas, Ahiflower seed oil contains therapeutically beneficial omega-6 gamma linolenic acid (GLA). Since SDA and GLA both bypass the rate-limiting step involving the liver enzyme delta-6 desaturase, our bodies metabolize them far more efficiently than other plant-derived omegas such as Alpha Linolenic Acid. In addition, it offers a far more efficient omega-3+6+9 solution. Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fatty acids, the type your body cannot produce naturally. Omega-9 fatty acids are monounsaturated acids and are produced naturally by the body.

Your Body Can More Easily Absorb It

Ahiflower acts like “turbo-charged” flax, chia, sacha inchi, or perilla oils in terms of EPA conversion — plus it provides omega-6 GLA usually derived from borage or evening primrose oils. Best of all, it has a clean aroma and a pleasingly rich taste that blends well into healthy foods and beverages (an improvement over some fish oils, for sure).

We highly recommend supplementing with Ahiflower seed oil! It’s an amazing way to protect your heart, reduce inflammation to take care of your health and the planet!
